This is a large group of hardy and tender succulent annuals and perennials. Only one of the annual kinds, S. caeruleum, is of any garden importance, however. Sedums, commonly called Stonecrop, are widely distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere. S. 'Ruby Glow' is a pretty plant that forms clumps of plump, oval, purple gray leaves. From late summer to fall, a profusion of tiny, ruby red flowers are borne in compact, flattened heads atop leafy stems. This plant grows 12 to 18 inches high. S. spectabile 'Brilliant' (Ice Plant) has rose pink flowers from late summer to fall. The annual kind, S. caeruleum, is a very beautiful plant that bears light blue flowers in July and August.
Pot Cultivation
Grow these plants in fertile, well-drained soil and provide plenty of moisture during the summer. They should have full sun. Bees and butterflies are very attracted to these plants.
Propagation
They can be divided in the spring.
